Passenger's Mid-Air Chaos: Attempt To Open Emergency Door Foiled By Quick-Thinking Travellers

An alarming incident unfolded on Copa Airlines Flight CM204 from Brasília to Panama City when a passenger tried to open the plane's emergency door mid-flight. The video of the tense situation, which occurred just 30 minutes before landing, has gone viral on social media platform X.

The chaos began when the passenger, armed with a plastic knife taken from his meal tray, rushed to the back of the plane, attempting to take a flight attendant hostage and demanding access to the emergency exit. Cristiano Carvalho, a photojournalist who witnessed and recorded parts of the event, described the commotion, recounting how a flight attendant's initial efforts to restrain the man were unsuccessful due to his strength. The man ignored repeated warnings and pressed forward in his attempt to reach the emergency door, according to a report in New York Post.

Passengers quickly sprang into action, managing to subdue the individual and pin him to the floor, preventing a potentially catastrophic outcome. The incident took place early Tuesday, and upon landing in Panama City, military officers boarded the aircraft to arrest the passenger, who appeared bloodied from the altercation.

In a statement following the event, Copa Airlines confirmed that the passenger was handed over to judicial authorities after being removed from the plane. The airline praised the quick thinking of both the crew and passengers, emphasizing that established safety measures were implemented effectively. "Thanks to the professionalism of the crew, the safety of the flight and passengers was protected," a Copa Airlines spokesperson remarked.
