Paris Mourns Pope Francis: Eiffel Tower To Go Dark In Memory Of Pontiff

The iconic lights of the Eiffel Tower will be turned off on Monday night as a tribute to Pope Francis, who has passed away at the age of 88, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced.

The Paris city authorities are also planning to dedicate a location in the French capital in memory of the Pope, whom Hidalgo praised for placing "ecology at the heart of spiritual concerns" and for advocating the "welcoming of refugees."

Meanwhile, the bells of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris tolled 88 times on Monday, marking each year of the Pope's life, according to an AFP report.

The tribute, described as "88 rings for 88 years of life," was followed by a full peal of the cathedral's bells ahead of a midday mass held in honour of Pope Francis, with another service scheduled for the early evening, the cathedral's press office stated.
