Paris attacker arrested
A man has been apprehended following a stabbing incident that left three individuals injured at the bustling Gare de Lyon railway station in Paris. According to reports, passengers and a security agent tackled the alleged attacker just before 8 am on Saturday, with officers arriving shortly thereafter. Early indications from the police suggest that the attack is not terrorism-related, as reported by The Guardian
The three victims, situated in the station's lower-level hall number three, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Two of them were transported to the hospital, with one reported to have a serious wound.
French media sources revealed that the arrested man, allegedly carrying a knife and a hammer, hails from Mali and presented an Italian driving license during his arrest. Le Figaro reported that the 32-year-old individual had attempted to ignite his backpack before the police intervened, and a police source suggested he exhibited "psychological difficulties," reported the Guardian.
The Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, expressed on X, formerly known as Twitter: "This morning at the Gare de Lyon, an individual injured three people with a knife before being arrested. One person is seriously injured; two others suffered higher injuries. They were treated by the emergency services. Thank you to those who restrained the perpetrator of this unacceptable act."
An official investigation into the attack has been initiated by the police. The Gare de Lyon, one of Paris's six mainline railway stations, serves national trains to the southeast of France and international links to Switzerland, Italy, and Spain. It also acts as a hub for suburban train services and the Paris Metro.
Several knife attacks have occurred in the French capital over the past year, including a fatal incident near the Eiffel Tower in December and an attack at the Gare du Nord in January, where six people were injured, as per the Guardian reports.
