Panic Erupts at Soccer Match in Guinea, Leading to 56 Deaths Amid Chaos

Chaos erupted at a football match in Guinea, leading to a tragic stampede that resulted in at least 56 deaths. The incident occurred after fans protested a referee's decision, causing panic among thousands of spectators who attempted to flee the stadium. Security forces responded with tear gas, according to Media Guinea. Many victims were crushed while trying to escape through the stadium gates.

Tragic Panic at Soccer Match in Guinea

Enock Loua, a resident of Nzerekore, received devastating news over the phone about his niece Aline Olivier's death. "We have a hard time realizing what happened to us, it is as if the sky has fallen on our heads," Loua shared with The Associated Press. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine accountability, as stated by Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah on national television.

Security Measures and Public Reaction

Following the tragedy, checkpoints were established throughout Nzerekore, a city with around 200,000 residents. Soldiers guarded the hospital where victims were treated, and most shops remained closed. Video footage from the scene showed fans protesting and attempting to escape by climbing over fences. Many injured individuals were in critical condition, and several of the deceased were children.

The disaster unfolded during a match between local teams Labe and Nzerekore at the Third of April stadium. The event was part of the first national tournament honouring military leader Mamadi Doumbouya. Cissé Lancine, who witnessed the chaos, said he survived by climbing over a stadium wall instead of rushing towards the exit.

Political Context and Criticism

The National Alliance for Alternation and Democracy criticised the tournament as an attempt to garner support for Doumbouya's "illegal and inappropriate" political ambitions. Doumbouya seized power from President Alpha Conde in 2021 and has shown interest in running for president despite restrictions in the transition charter he established.

Guinea is among several West African nations where military regimes have delayed returning to civilian governance. Doumbouya claims he is preventing chaos and blames previous administrations for unfulfilled promises. However, he faces criticism for not meeting public expectations since taking power.

The recent tragedy highlights ongoing tensions in Guinea under military rule. As authorities work to identify those responsible for the disaster, questions remain about future political developments and stability in the region.
