Panama: When Pak SC quoted fromThe Godfather before ordering probe against Sharif
The Supreme Court of Pakistan opened its 500 plus judgment in the Panama papers case with a line from the popular 1969 novel, The Godfather. " Behind every great fortune there is a crime-Balzac," the judgment's opening line states.
The five judge bench further states that the novel was a popular sensation which was made into an acclaimed film. It is believed that this epigraph was inspired by a sentence that was written by Honore de Balzac.
While translating the original sentence from French, the judges said, " the secret of great success for which you are at a loss to account is a crime that has never been found out, because it was properly executed."
The SC then ordered the formation of a joint investigation team to probe prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his family in connection with the case. The JIT would include officials of the NAB, FIA, the Exchange Commission of Pakistan, Inter-Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence. The probe would be led by an officer of the FIA in the rank of a director-general. A special bench will examine the case under Section 184/3 of the Constitution, the court also said.
