Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino Declares No Negotiation on Canal Ownership with the United States

AP Panama President Jose Raul Mulino announced there will be no discussions with the United States regarding the ownership of the Panama Canal. He expressed hope that the upcoming visit by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will focus on mutual interests like migration and drug trafficking control. Mulino emphasised the canal's ownership is a settled matter, stating, "The canal belongs to Panama."

No Negotiation on Panama Canal Ownership

Mulino addressed the media at his weekly press conference, aiming to reduce tensions. He sought to clarify misunderstandings about China's involvement with the canal. A Hong Kong consortium manages ports at both ends, but Panama retains control over the canal itself. Mulino attributed diplomatic ties with China to a previous administration.

US-Panama Relations and Canal Ownership

The visit by Rubio, representing US President Donald Trump, holds significance for Panama. Trump has previously suggested that the US should reclaim control of the canal. On his inauguration day, Trump claimed US ships were being "severely overcharged and not treated fairly in any way, shape or form," particularly highlighting China's role in operating the canal.

The Panama Canal was constructed by the United States in the early 20th century to facilitate commercial and military vessel transit between its coasts. Control was transferred to Panama on December 31, 1999, following a treaty signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter. Mulino reiterated that negotiating its return is not possible.

Focus on Shared Interests

Mulino expressed his desire to clear any misunderstandings and engage in open discussions with the United States. He aims to address issues such as immigration, security, and combating drug trafficking during Rubio's visit. "The only thing that I want is to clear all the garbage from the path, clean the table and be able to speak with the United States and very frankly," Mulino stated.

Rubio is set to meet with Mulino on Sunday and will also visit the canal during his trip. The meeting is expected to provide an opportunity for both nations to strengthen their cooperation on shared challenges while affirming Panama's sovereignty over the canal.

This visit marks an important diplomatic engagement for Panama as it seeks to maintain strong relations with the United States while addressing regional issues collaboratively.
