Palestinian Asylum-Seeker Arrested in Texas After Posting TikTok Videos of Firing AR-15 Rifle

A Palestinian asylum-seeker has been arrested in the US state of Texas after he posted videos on TikTok, firing an AR-15-style rifle. The FBI confirmed the arrest following a multi-agency investigation into social media videos involving firearms and shooting ranges.

In a recent incident in the United States, a Palestinian asylum-seeker was arrested in Texas following his posts on TikTok where he was seen firing an AR-15-style rifle. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed on Friday that they had apprehended a Jordanian citizen who is seeking asylum in the country, under federal gun charges. This arrest came after an extensive multi-agency investigation regarding videos featuring firearms and shooting ranges in Houston area circulating on social media.

asylum-seeker

The accused, Sohaib Abuayyash aged 20, was taken into custody last Thursday. The FBI made this move after reviewing various videos posted by Abuayyash on his social media handles. One video dated August 11 showed him firing semi-automatic pistols and a rifle at a range located in Houston. According to the unsealed federal criminal complaint filed in Texas, this video which originally appeared on TikTok demonstrated Abuayyash discharging fifteen rounds from the semi-automatic rifle followed by shots from two handguns.

Suspected Radical Links

An affidavit submitted by an FBI agent last Thursday suggests that Abuayyash has been maintaining direct contact with individuals who possess radical mindsets. As per the document, he has been undergoing physical training and weapons training with possible intentions to carry out an attack.

Abuayyash's Immigration Status

The affidavit further reveals that Abuayyash arrived in America back in 2019 via tourist visa application made from Jerusalem where he declared himself as a Palestinian citizen. However, he overstayed his visa duration and applied for asylum during 2020 - an application which is still pending according to court records. Despite being granted employment authorization valid till August 2023 (due to expire within two years), his immigration status does not permit him to use or possess any weapons.

Additional Charges

Federal investigators have found additional evidence against Abuayyash. Apart from the videos posted on his social media, it was determined that he visited another gun range in Saddle River Spring Texas with two other individuals identified as "AJ" and "MD" in court documents. Surveillance footage dated September 17 from this range showed Abuayyash firing nine rounds from a black handgun equipped with optics bought by AJ a week before.

Pending Court Proceedings

Abuayyash is now facing one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by an alien who has been admitted to the US under a nonimmigrant visa. He made his initial appearance in federal court located in Houston last Friday where he was ordered to be held in jail. A detention hearing for him is scheduled for Tuesday.

In conclusion, this incident underscores the potential risks posed by social media platforms when misused and highlights the importance of strict vigilance over digital content shared online. It also raises questions about immigration policies and their enforcement, particularly concerning individuals seeking asylum status.
