Supreme Court Rejects PTIs Intra-Party Polls, Revokes Bat Symbol
Pakistans Supreme Court has declared Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insafs intra-party polls invalid, reversing a Peshawar High Court ruling that had restored the partys iconic bat election symbol.
In a significant development, Pakistan's Supreme Court late Saturday night declared the intra-party polls of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) null and void, effectively stripping the party of its iconic bat election symbol. This decision settles the raging controversy surrounding the award of the electoral symbol.

ECP Challenges Peshawar High Court Verdict
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had challenged the verdict of a two-member bench of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), which had restored the cricket bat as the electoral symbol of PTI and validated its elections. The ECP contended that the PHC's decision was flawed and sought its reversal.
Supreme Court's Judgment
A three-member bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, and Justice Musarrat Hilali, heard the ECP's petition and reserved its judgment after the hearing. Late Saturday night, the court announced its decision, setting aside the PHC judgment and restoring the ECP's earlier verdict.
Controversy Over Election Symbol
The controversy over the election symbol began on December 22, 2022, when the ECP stripped PTI of its electoral symbol for the upcoming February 8 elections, citing irregularities in the party's intra-party polls. This decision sparked legal challenges from PTI, leading to a series of court rulings and appeals.
Significance of Bat Symbol
The bat is a traditional symbol of PTI, and its removal is seen as a significant setback for the party. Without a common symbol, PTI candidates will have to contest the elections as independent candidates, potentially creating confusion among voters and affecting the party's electoral prospects.
Reactions to the Verdict
Reacting to the Supreme Court's judgment, PTI leaders expressed disappointment and concern. Barrister Gohar Khan, PTI's chairman, criticized the verdict, calling it another bad judgment by the Supreme Court. Ali Zafar, a prominent PTI member, stated that history would judge the verdict, but its immediate impact would be that PTI candidates would have to contest without a common symbol.
The Supreme Court's decision has significant implications for PTI and its participation in the upcoming elections. The party faces challenges in mobilizing its supporters and ensuring a unified electoral strategy without a common symbol. The verdict is likely to further intensify political tensions in Pakistan as the country prepares for the crucial polls.
