Pakistan: Schools Shut, Internet Suspended, Shoot At Sight Ordered As PTI Protestors Defy Lockdown
In a dramatic series of events, former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters have intensified their efforts to secure his release from prison. The capital city of Islamabad witnessed scenes of chaos as protesters managed to bypass barriers of shipping containers strategically placed to restrict their movement.
This surge of unrest has led to tragic consequences, including the death of at least six individuals, amidst clashes with security forces. The government, feeling cornered by the escalating violence, has issued a stern shoot-at-sight directive to maintain order.

Amid the turmoil, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi issued a warning that security forces were authorized to return fire if attacked, highlighting the gravity of the situation. "If they again fire bullets, the bullet will be responded with the bullet," he declared, signaling a zero-tolerance policy against armed protest.
This statement came after a grim tally of casualties, including four security personnel and one civilian, fell victim to a vehicle assault, with no group claiming responsibility for this act of violence. The Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, condemned these attacks, labeling the culprits as an "anarchist group" aiming to undermine law enforcement.
The crackdown on PTI supporters has been severe, with over 4,000 arrests reported since Friday. Authorities have also taken drastic measures by suspending mobile and internet services in certain areas, severely hampering communication. A court has even issued a prohibition on rallies within the capital, a directive that PTI has chosen to defy. The disruption has extended to the daily lives of residents, with roadblocks making travel between Islamabad and other cities a formidable challenge, leading to the closure of educational institutions and significant interruptions to mobile internet and messaging services. Such actions have particularly hindered PTI's reliance on social media for mobilizing support and disseminating information about their cause.
Khan, despite being incarcerated for over a year and facing upwards of 150 criminal charges, continues to enjoy significant popularity among his supporters. His party insists that the legal troubles he faces are politically motivated, a claim the government refutes by stating that only the courts hold the power to release him. Khan has been detained since his first conviction in a graft case in August 2023, following his ousting through a no-confidence vote in Parliament in 2022.
In response to the government's attempts to quell the protests, Bushra Bibi, Khan's wife and now a leading figure in the movement, has called for a peaceful march towards the city's Red Zone, where key governmental buildings are located. Despite being around 10 km away from their goal, she urged the government to refrain from harming demonstrators and promised another plan of action if Khan was not released. This ongoing standoff has not only disrupted daily life in Islamabad but has also coincided with the official visit of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, adding an international dimension to the unfolding crisis.
Journalists covering the protest have not been spared, with many attacked by Khan supporters, including a videographer for The Associated Press who sustained head injuries. This has led to a shift in media coverage, focusing more on the security measures and less on the rally itself. The government's resolve to suppress the protests is evident in its readiness to employ live fire against armed protesters, a stance that has put all parties on a potentially explosive collision course.
The situation remains tense, with the government and PTI locked in a standoff that shows no signs of abating. The ongoing unrest not only highlights the deep political divisions within Pakistan but also poses significant challenges to peace and stability in the region. As both sides stand firm, the path to resolution remains uncertain, with the hopes of a peaceful outcome hanging in the balance.
