Pakistans Political Landscape Shifts with New Coalition Government

PML-N Set to Lead the Coalition, Shehbaz Sharif Likely to Head Government

Although an official announcement regarding the prime minister's position has not been made, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif expressed his intention to request his elder brother and party supremo Nawaz Sharif to assume the role of prime minister for a record fourth time. However, it is more likely that Shehbaz Sharif himself will lead the government, similar to his previous tenure after Imran Khan's ouster in April 2022.

Leaders Meet to Discuss Formation of New Government

Shehbaz Sharif, along with Asif Ali Zardari of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and Shujaat Hussain of the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), convened at the residence of Shujaat Hussain following a consultative meeting. Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for their decision to support the PML-N in the formation of the government.

Electoral Results and Path to Government Formation

To form a government, a party must secure a majority of 133 seats out of the 265 contested seats in the 266-member National Assembly. According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, independent candidates, largely backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), secured 101 seats, followed by the PML-N with 75 seats, the PPP with 54 seats, and the MQM-P with 17 seats. Other parties secured 17 seats, while the result of one constituency remains withheld.

Addressing Economic Challenges and Future Plans

Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the new government's primary focus will be to address the country's economic challenges. He acknowledged the daunting task of stabilizing the economy and stressed the importance of unity among the leadership to overcome conflicts and move the nation forward. Additionally, Shehbaz Sharif announced that his niece Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Nawaz Sharif, will be the party's candidate for the chief minister of Punjab, sparking speculation about the future of the provincial government.

Coalition Government to Prioritize Economic Recovery and Reconciliation

Earlier in the press conference, Asif Ali Zardari confirmed the formation of a coalition government and expressed their commitment to pulling the country out of the economic crisis. He also mentioned the intention to reconcile with all parties, including Imran Khan's PTI. Zardari promised to lead the country towards prosperity and overcome the current challenges.

Transition to New Government Expected by Month's End

With the key political parties coming together to form the new government, the transition from the election to the new government is expected to take place according to the law by the end of this month.
