Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Cancels 48 Flights Due to Fuel Shortage
Pakistan's national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), has been forced to cancel 48 flights, including both domestic and international routes, due to a critical shortage of fuel.
A PIA spokesperson informed The Dawn, a Pakistani news outlet, that the flight cancellations were a direct consequence of limited fuel availability for their daily operations and several operational challenges. Some of the affected flights had to have their departure times rescheduled.

Of the 48 cancellations, 13 were domestic flights, and 11 were on international routes, all due to the unavailability of fuel. Furthermore, twelve other flights faced delays.
PIA made efforts to accommodate passengers from the canceled flights by transferring them to alternative flights. The airline also urged passengers to verify their flight status by contacting PIA customer care, visiting PIA offices, or consulting their travel agents before heading to the airport following this decision.
On the same day, PIA had to cancel over a dozen flights, consisting of 16 international and eight domestic flights, while additional delays were expected.
The root cause of this fuel shortage crisis can be attributed to the state-owned Pakistan State Oil (PSO) suspending fuel supply to PIA due to unpaid dues. PIA, already teetering on the edge of financial collapse and moving towards privatization because of its mounting debts, faces an uncertain future.
Adding to the airline's woes, the Pakistan government has refused to provide the requested Rs 23 billion in support for operational expenses. PIA requires Rs 100 million daily to meet its fuel expenses with PSO, but the latter insists on advance cash payments, making it increasingly challenging for PIA to fulfill this requirement and raising concerns about more potential flight cancellations in the days ahead.
