Pakistan Horror: Pregnant Woman Tortured, Killed, And Dismembered Over Witchcraft Superstition
In a harrowing occurrence in Daska, Sialkot district, approximately 100 km away from Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan, a pregnant woman became the victim of a brutal murder. Last week, this tragic incident came to light when the police discovered the dismembered remains of Zara Qadir, a woman in her 20s, hidden within three sacks in a drain. Zara, notably the daughter of a police officer, had vanished a week prior, prompting an extensive search that led to this gruesome discovery. Authorities have since apprehended four individuals linked to her murder, including her mother-in-law Sughran Bibi, her sister-in-law Yasmin, her nephew Hamza, and a distant relative named Navid.
The investigation into Zara's disappearance unveiled a complex family dynamic and a motive rooted in jealousy and suspicion. Senior police officer Omar Farooq revealed that Sughran Bibi harbored resentment towards Zara, accusing her of witchcraft and resenting the direct financial support she received from her husband, Qadir Ahmad. According to Farooq, "In her confessional statement, Sughran Bibi said that she suspected Zara of allegedly practising 'witchcraft'. Besides, her son Qadir had started sending money directly to Zara in her bank instead to his mother." This financial independence and the suspected witchcraft precipitated a violent response from Sughran and her accomplices.

The suspects meticulously executed their heinous act by first smothering Zara with a pillow as she slept. To further conceal their crime, they disfigured her face, dismembered her body into numerous pieces, and disposed of the remains in a drain, packed in three sacks. Farooq detailed the grim method of concealment, highlighting the brutality inflicted upon Zara, who was also expecting a child at the time of her murder.
Zara's marriage to Qadir Ahmad had led her to Saudi Arabia, where her husband was employed. However, she had returned to Pakistan a few months ago, leaving behind a three-year-old son. The revelation of her familial ties adds another layer to the tragedy, as Sughran Bibi was not only her mother-in-law but also her aunt, being the sister of Zara's father. This familial connection underscores the deep-seated jealousy that motivated the crime.
The authorities were initially directed towards the suspects based on the suspicions of Zara's father, who believed Sughran could be responsible due to her claims that Zara had eloped with a lover. Further investigation prompted Sughran's confession to the crime, laying bare the extent of her jealousy. "This is a case of extreme jealousy as the mother-in-law and her daughter not only killed Zara but in cold blood dismembered her body into pieces in hatred," Farooq stated, condemning the actions of Sughran and Yasmin who believed Zara's attractiveness led to her husband's negligence towards them.
In the aftermath of this shocking crime, a murder case has been registered against the four suspects. The community and law enforcement are left to grapple with the devastating impact of familial betrayal that culminated in such a tragic loss of life.
