Pakistan Floods: Dozens Swept Away, 16 From A Family; 7 Dead

Flash floods in northwest Pakistan have claimed at least seven lives, with several others missing. The sudden deluge, caused by pre-monsoon rains, swept away tourists along the Swat River on Friday. Rescue teams reported that the victims were enjoying a picnic near the river when the floods hit unexpectedly.

Rescue Efforts and Family Tragedy

Shah Fahad, a spokesperson for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's emergency services, stated that nearly 100 rescuers are actively searching for those missing. Among the affected are 16 members from one family, with seven individuals rescued and seven bodies recovered so far.

Pakistan Floods

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his sorrow over the incident and instructed officials to improve safety measures near water bodies to avoid further tragedies. The Swat Valley is a popular tourist spot during both summer and winter seasons.

Distressing Scenes Captured

Videos circulating on social media depict dramatic rescue scenes. A group of about twelve people can be seen stranded on an elevated area in the river, desperately calling for help as floodwaters rise around them.

The public has been advised to heed government warnings regarding flash floods, particularly in areas like Swat Valley. Authorities stress the importance of staying informed and cautious during such weather events.

Nationwide Impact and Weather Forecast

The death toll across Pakistan has risen to 17 due to rain-related incidents in Punjab and Sindh provinces over the past day. Heavy rains have disrupted transportation and damaged homes since earlier this week.

Meteorologists predict more rainfall as the monsoon season approaches. Typically spanning July to September, this year's monsoon is expected to be less severe than last year's devastating floods that affected a third of Pakistan and resulted in nearly 1,740 deaths.
