Pakistan Election 2024 Highlights: Imran Khan's PTI Faces Rigging Allegations, 'Audio Leaks' Unveiled

Purported audio recordings allegedly involving key leaders from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) have been cited as supporting allegations by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) that the February 8 elections were manipulated and that their electoral mandate was usurped.

In these recordings, concerns over the authenticity of their mandate are purportedly expressed by Kamran Tessori, the Governor of Sindh, who is heard stating that it was "100 per cent fake". Tessori detailed the MQM-P's shift in allegiance from PTI to the Pakistan Democratic Alliance in April 2022, a move that was unfavourably received by their electorate, as reported by India Today.

In the purported audio, reminiscences about the 2018 elections were shared by the Governor, attributing MQM-P's securing of seven National Assembly seats in Karachi to a genuine support base. "Today (February 8 polls) votes weren't obtained," the Governor's statement is heard saying.

In the February 8 election, PTI-backed candidates won 92 National Assembly seats, surpassing the tallies of Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Despite this, a coalition was formed between PML-N, PPP, and other parties, sidelining PTI and its affiliates.

In the purported audio, grievances regarding the distribution of power were voiced by Tessori, highlighting that MQM-P was being offered minimal representation in the government. "What we are getting now is one ministerial position. They even want to take away the governorship and worst of all we have lost the confidence and trust of our voters now," a report in the newspaper Jang said, quoting Tessori, as reported by India Today.

In another leaked audio featuring MQM-P's Senior Deputy Convener Mustafa Kamal, discussions with the PML-N delegation were revealed, indicating pressure from PPP to marginalize MQM-P due to alleged illegitimacy of their mandate.

"We had a meeting with the PML-N delegation, and they conveyed two messages -- the PPP is asserting that the MQM-P's mandate is entirely fabricated, and since PML-N and PPP possess sufficient parliamentary support to establish the government, MQM-P should be sidelined," Kamal is heard stating in the audio.

The claims presented in the audio clips were confirmed by Kamal but were dismissed as recurring accusations from political adversaries. The MQM-P secured 17 National Assembly seats in Karachi. PTI asserted that in all the winning seats, MQM-P candidates did not even hold the third position. PTI has accused the establishment of stealing its 90 National Assembly seats and over 100 Punjab Assembly seats, distributing them among PMLN, MQM-P, and PPP to establish "fake governments," as reported by India Today.
