Pakistan Election 2024 Highlights: Delay In Pak Govt Formation Poses Threat To Democracy, Warns Bilawal Bhutto

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari voiced concerns on Tuesday, indicating a potential deadlock in the formation of the new government if certain parties refuse to reconsider their positions.

Another round of discussions between the PML-N and the PPP regarding the government formation remained inconclusive on Monday. This has led to speculation that negotiations might continue until the constitutional deadline of February 29 for the first National Assembly session, as reported by Dawn.

As negotiations persist, insiders suggested that the PPP is facing pressure from various quarters, including internal factions, to participate in the government. Talks are set to resume today. Yesterday, PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira hinted that the final announcement of the new coalition government could occur between February 27-28, as discussions between the PPP and PML-N continue to unfold, reported Dawn.

Kaira also confirmed ongoing discussions between the PPP and PML-N, emphasizing that ministry portfolios were not on the agenda during their meetings. The PPP has assured support to the PML-N for government formation and the election of the next prime minister, under the condition of receiving key constitutional offices, including the presidency, in return.

Speaking to reporters outside the Supreme Court, Bilawal emphasized the necessity of cooperation among political parties in a democracy. He stressed the importance of compromise and dialogue to navigate the current political situation and preserve democratic values.

When questioned about the PPP's discussions with the PML-N, Bilawal highlighted concerns regarding the legitimacy of the recent general elections and affirmed the party's commitment to engage with those who approach them.

Bilawal criticized the delay in government formation, attributing it to the perceived lack of seriousness in the dialogue committee's approach. He emphasized that the prolonged stalemate could jeopardize democracy, economic stability, and political cohesion in the country.

During the media interaction, Bilawal expressed frustration with a journalist's assertion regarding compromises with the establishment, demanding evidence to support the claims. He reiterated the party's commitment to upholding democratic principles and urged responsible journalism, as per the local media reports.

It is noteworthy that recent remarks by JUI-F chief Fazlur Rehman stirred controversy, suggesting the involvement of former army officials in political manoeuvres. Rehman later clarified his statements, retracting the mention of specific individuals. The ongoing dialogue and negotiations between political parties will determine the trajectory of Pakistan's political landscape in the coming days, as stakeholders seek to form a stable government amidst mounting challenges and uncertainties, reported Dawn.
