In preparation for the February 8 general elections, Pakistans caretaker government has authorized the deployment of regular Army troops to bolster security measures. This decision aims to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process.

In a significant move to ensure peaceful and secure elections, the Pakistan government has formally decided to deploy regular Army troops during the upcoming February 8 elections. This decision was reached during a cabinet meeting chaired by caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar.

Pakistans Polls: Army Steps In to Safeguard Democracy

Cabinet Approves Troop Deployment

The Ministry of Interior presented a summary seeking the deployment of troops, which was subsequently approved by the federal cabinet. According to an official statement released after the meeting, the Pakistan Army and Civil Armed Forces troops will be deployed to maintain law and order at sensitive constituencies and polling stations. These forces will also serve as a rapid response unit to address any unforeseen situations.

ECP's Request for Security Personnel

The decision to deploy the Army comes in response to a request from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which sought the deployment of approximately 277,000 Army personnel across the country. This request aims to ensure a secure environment for over 126 million Pakistani voters who are expected to cast their votes on February 8.

Army's Role under the Constitution

The deployment of the armed forces is authorized under the Constitution of Pakistan. The Army can provide security or any other services required by the government, subject to approval by the cabinet. In the current context, the Army's assistance is crucial given the rising threat of militancy and the need to maintain a peaceful electoral process.

Challenging Security Situation

The year 2023 has witnessed a significant increase in terror-related incidents, making it one of the most challenging years since 2015. Recent incidents include the tragic killing of independent candidate Kaleemullah Khan in North Waziristan and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Shah Khalid in Swabi. These incidents underscore the importance of robust security measures during the upcoming elections.

High-Level Committee for Security Oversight

Recognizing the precarious security situation, caretaker Prime Minister Kakar has established a high-level committee to oversee security arrangements for the polls. This committee will play a crucial role in coordinating efforts among various security agencies and ensuring a safe and secure environment for voters and election officials.

The deployment of Army troops during the February 8 elections reflects the Pakistan government's commitment to conducting a peaceful and transparent electoral process. By taking proactive measures to address security concerns, the government aims to facilitate the smooth exercise of democratic rights for all Pakistani citizens.
