Pakistan Approves Chief Of Defence Forces Role For Enhanced Military Coordination

Pakistan has elevated General Asim Munir to a more influential position just months after his promotion to Field Marshal. On Saturday, Islamabad reportedly approved a constitutional amendment establishing the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) role. This new position aims to unify command and enhance coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, presented in Parliament, seeks to amend Article 243 of Pakistan's Constitution. This article addresses matters related to the armed forces. According to a PTI report, both the Army Chief and the newly created Chief of Defence Forces will be appointed by the President the Prime Minister's advice.

Details the Proposed Legislation

The legislation outlines that the Chief of Army Staff will also serve as the Chief of Defence Forces. This individual will appoint the head of the National Strategic Command in consultation with the Prime Minister. An officer from the Pakistan Army will hold this post.

Additionally, the amendment allows for officers' promotion to honorary five-star ranks like Field Marshal, Marshal of the Air Force, and Admiral of the Fleet. The Field Marshal title comes with lifelong privileges.

Impact on Military Structure

The bill specifies that from November 27, 2025, the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee post will cease to exist. This change effectively consolidates Pakistan's top military authority under Asim Munir's leadership.

Munir's elevation earlier this year made him only the second officer in Pakistan's history to achieve Field Marshal rank. His latest promotion as Chief of Defence Forces indicates Islamabad's intent to centralize military power amid regional pressures.

Lessons from Recent Conflicts

According to Pakistani media, military restructuring was influenced by lessons from a four-day conflict with India in May. This followed an April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The operation resulted in intense clashes over four days before both sides agreed to cease military actions on May 10. Indian Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh later stated that at least a dozen Pakistani military aircraft were destroyed or damaged during these strikes.

The creation of this powerful new position further cements Munir's dominance over Pakistan's military establishment. It positions him as one of the most influential military figures in modern Pakistani history.
