Overcrowded Boat Capsizes on Lake Kivu in Eastern Congo, Leaving at Least 78 Dead

An overcrowded boat carrying 278 passengers capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Congo, resulting in at least 78 fatalities. The incident occurred on Thursday, as reported by Jean-Jacques Purusi, the governor of South Kivu province. The death toll is provisional and may increase. The tragedy unfolded as the vessel attempted to dock near the port of Kituku.

Tragic Boat Capsize on Lake Kivu

Witnesses described the boat's journey from Minova in South Kivu province to Goma in North Kivu province. They observed rescue teams retrieving at least 50 bodies from the lake earlier that day. The boat, heavily loaded with passengers, sank just metres from the port. Approximately 10 survivors were initially taken to a local hospital, but later reports indicated around 50 people were rescued.

Overcrowding and Safety Concerns

Overcrowding on boats is a recurring issue in Congo, often leading to such tragic accidents. Maritime safety regulations are frequently ignored, contributing to these disasters. Despite warnings from Congolese officials about overloading vessels and promises to enforce safety measures, many passengers rely on water transport due to limited road access and affordability issues.

In June, a similar incident near Kinshasa resulted in 80 deaths when an overloaded boat sank. Earlier this year, 22 people died on Lake Maï-Ndombe in January, and six were killed with 64 missing on Lake Kivu in April. Witnesses of Thursday's accident noted the boat was visibly overcrowded.

Witness Accounts and Reactions

Francine Munyi, who witnessed the event at Kituku port, recounted seeing the boat arrive from Minova full of passengers. "It started to lose its balance and sank into the lake," she said. Many passengers jumped into the water; however, she was unable to assist as she couldn't swim.

The families of victims and Goma residents gathered at Kituku port, accusing authorities of negligence amid rising regional insecurity. Due to conflicts between armed forces and M23 rebels, road travel between Goma and Minova has become unsafe, forcing traders to use Lake Kivu for transportation.

Survivors' Experiences

Elia Asumani, a shipping agent familiar with this route, expressed concerns about the dangers of maritime transport under current conditions. "We are afraid," he stated, noting that this shipwreck seemed inevitable. Bienfait Sematumba shared his grief after losing four family members in the accident.

Survivor Neema Chimanga recounted her harrowing experience: "We saw the boat start to fill with water halfway." She described how they tried closing the door as water poured in before jumping into the lake herself. Despite not knowing how she survived, Chimanga managed to escape the sinking vessel.

The tragic incident highlights ongoing challenges with maritime safety in Congo. Overcrowding remains a significant risk factor for those relying on water transport due to limited road infrastructure and regional instability.
