Over 3400 Flights Cancelled, Thousands Of Passengers Stranded Due To German Airport Association Workers' Strik
Germany is grappling with widespread flight cancellations due to a one-day strike. This has affected 13 major airports, including Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, and Berlin. The strike commenced at midnight, leading to numerous grounded flights and leaving thousands of passengers stranded. According to the German airport association ADV, approximately 3,400 flights have been cancelled, impacting around 500,000 travellers.
The strike involves public-sector workers such as airport ground staff and security personnel. The Verdi union initiated the walkout amid ongoing pay disputes. Christine Behle, the union's deputy chair, expressed regret for the inconvenience but stressed that industrial action was necessary for negotiation progress.

Impact on Major Airports
Frankfurt Airport faced severe disruptions as Germany's busiest hub. Operator Fraport confirmed that no passengers could board flights and transit flights were significantly affected. Out of 1,116 scheduled flights, 1,054 were cancelled, nearly halting operations entirely. Other major airports like Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg also experienced extensive cancellations and delays.
Berlin Airport saw no departures or arrivals during the strike. Meanwhile, Munich and Hamburg operated on limited schedules. Smaller airports such as Bremen, Dortmund, Cologne/Bonn, and Leipzig/Halle were also impacted to varying degrees. Some faced total shutdowns or severely restricted operations due to participating security workers.
Reasons Behind the Strike
The strike is rooted in two ongoing pay disputes involving airport security workers and federal and municipal government employees. Workers are demanding better pay and working conditions due to inflation and rising living costs. Negotiations for government workers will resume on Friday while talks for airport security workers are set for March 26.
The disruptions have caused significant delays not only for passengers but also for businesses relying on timely air transport for goods and services. Travellers are advised to check flight statuses regularly and consider alternative arrangements as many flights remain grounded throughout the day.
The impact of this strike is expected to extend beyond today with lasting effects on Germany's air travel network in the coming days.
