In São Paulo, police violence is increasing, yet this incident shocked many. Journalist Guga Noblat expressed his disgust on X, calling it "absurd," "cowardly," and "disgusting." Police Violence in São Paulo

Another incident in São Paulo involved an off-duty military police officer who shot and killed a young man last month. The young man had stolen soap packets. This footage was released by local media outlet G1 on Monday. These acts have raised questions about police conduct in the state.

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas stated on X, "Those who shoot people in the back, those who go so far as to throw someone off a bridge, are clearly not fit to wear this uniform. These cases will be investigated and severely punished." De Freitas is an ally of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who has supported giving police more freedom to act against criminals.

Rising Police Violence Under New Leadership

Tarcísio de Freitas assumed office in January 2023. Some view him as more moderate than Bolsonaro, but others point to increased police violence under his leadership. Watchdogs are pressuring him due to these rising incidents.

Statistics from the Sou da Paz Institute reveal that during de Freitas' first year, teenage deaths caused by police rose by 58.3% compared to 2022. Between January and August 2024, São Paulo's police killed 510 people, marking a 56% increase from 327 killings during the same period in 2023.

The ongoing rise in police violence in São Paulo continues to draw attention and criticism from various quarters. Authorities are under pressure to address these issues and ensure accountability for such actions.
