Washington, June 13: At least 50 people were killed while 53 were left injured after a 29-year-old man opened fire in the worst mass shooting in the history of the US.

US President Barack Obama on Sunday termed the mass shooting at an LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, as an "act of terror" in his address to the nation from the White House.

US has witnessed more public mass shootings than in any other country in the world, reported the CNN citing a study published recently. There were 90 mass shootings reported between 1966 and 2012.

Here is the timeline of Orlando shooting

  • The shooting started at 2:02 a.m. ET on Sunday at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Around 100 officers from the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Orlando Police Department responded to the incident.
  • An urgent message urging "Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running" was posted by the Pulse on Facebook" at 2:09 a.m. ET.
  • The shooter dialled 911 to pledge allegiance to ISIS. He also mentioned the Boston Marathon bombers during the call at 2:22 a.m. ET.
  • Orlando police posted this "Shooting at Pulse Nightclub on S Orange. Multiple injuries. Stay away from area," on Twitter at 3:58 a.m. ET.
  • An armoured vehicle used to smash down a door at the club to evict 30 people inside at around 5 am ET.
  • Shooter is dead, this was posted by the Orlando Police Department on Twitter at 5.53 am ET.
  • President Barack Obama addressed the attack from the White House, calling it an act of terror and an act of hate at 1.00 pm ET.
