Operation Midnight Hammer: The Largest B-2 Strike in US History

Operation Midnight Hammer, conducted on June 21, 2025, stands as a watershed moment in modern military history-a meticulously planned, highly classified air strike targeting Iran's most critical nuclear facilities.

The mission, involving a complex orchestration of stealth bombers, advanced munitions and tactical deception, was designed to neutralise Iran's nuclear capabilities while minimizing collateral damage and maintaining operational secrecy.

Here is a comprehensive account of the operation, its execution, and its significance.

Planning and Preparation

The operation was conceived as a direct response to escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, and to counter Iran's advancing nuclear program.

According to General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, only a select group of senior officials in Washington knew the details or timing of the plan, ensuring maximum security and surprise.

The goal was clear: deliver a precise, overwhelming blow to Iran's nuclear infrastructure at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

The mission was planned for months, with careful attention to deception and operational security.

The US military orchestrated a decoy movement, sending part of the strike package westward into the Pacific Ocean to mislead potential adversaries about the true target and timing of the attack. This "deception effort" was known only to a handful of planners and key leaders, further reducing the risk of leaks.

Execution: The Largest B-2 Operational Strike

At midnight on Friday, June 21, the main strike force-comprising seven B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, each with two crew members-departed Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.

The bombers flew eastward, maintaining minimal communications to avoid detection. The 18-hour mission required multiple in-flight refuelings, a testament to the endurance and planning required for such a long-range operation.

As the strike package approached the Middle East, it linked up with escort and support aircraft from US Central Command in a tightly timed, complex manoeuvre.

Prior to entering Iranian airspace, the US employed advanced deception tactics. Fourth- and fifth-generation fighter jets flew ahead at high altitude and speed, acting as decoys and suppressing potential air defenses. These fighters launched high-speed suppression munitions to neutralize any surface-to-air missile threats, ensuring safe passage for the B-2s.

At approximately 6:40 pm Eastern Standard Time (2:10 am local time in Iran), the lead B-2 dropped two GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bombs on the first of several aim points at Fordow. The remaining bombers followed, delivering a total of 14 MOPs against Fordow and Natanz.

All three nuclear sites were struck between 6:40 pm and 7:05 pm EST, with Tomahawk cruise missiles launched from a US submarine targeting Isfahan to maximize the element of surprise.

Weapons and Tactics

Operation Midnight Hammer marked the first operational use of the GBU-57 MOP, a 30,000-pound "bunker-buster" bomb designed to penetrate deeply buried, fortified targets.

The MOP's deployment was critical, as Fordow's nuclear facilities are buried under mountains, making them nearly impervious to conventional munitions.

In total, US forces employed approximately 75 precision-guided weapons during the operation, involving more than 125 aircraft, including fighters, bombers, and aerial refuelers. The mission was the largest B-2 operational strike in US history and the second longest B-2 mission ever flown, surpassed only by missions in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

Outcome and Assessment

Initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three targeted sites-Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan-sustained "extremely severe damage and destruction". The US military reported no losses or damage to its aircraft, and there were no indications that Iranian air defenses detected or engaged the strike package.

Iran's fighters did not scramble, and its surface-to-air missile systems failed to respond, underscoring the effectiveness of the US deception and suppression tactics.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth emphasised ( video embedded in article) that the mission was "intentionally limited" to nuclear facilities and was not intended to harm civilians or topple the Iranian regime. He praised the operation as a "bold and brilliant" success, highlighting the US military's unmatched capability to project power and precision at long range.

Strategic Significance

Operation Midnight Hammer represents a significant escalation in US involvement in the Middle East, occurring amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. The mission was executed in support of Israel's own "Operation Rising Lion," which had previously targeted Iranian nuclear and military infrastructure.

The operation also demonstrated the US military's ability to conduct complex, long-range precision strikes with minimal risk to its personnel. The use of advanced stealth technology, deception, and suppression tactics ensured that the mission was carried out with unprecedented efficiency and secrecy.

However, the strike has also raised concerns about potential Iranian retaliation and the risk of further escalation in the region. The US military has taken measures to protect its forces in the Middle East and remains on high alert for any Iranian response.
