OpenAI Launches ChatGPT-Powered Search Engine to Compete with Google and Enhance Information Access
OpenAI is introducing a search engine powered by ChatGPT, potentially challenging Google's dominance and influencing how users access news and other timely information. The San Francisco-based company announced that this feature will initially be available to paid ChatGPT users, with plans to extend it to all users. A preview was released in July to select users and publishers.

In 2022, the first version of ChatGPT was launched, trained on extensive online texts. However, it couldn't address questions about recent events not included in its training data. Google's search engine underwent changes in May, incorporating AI-generated summaries at the top of search results. These summaries aim to provide quick answers, reducing the need for users to click on links for more details.
AI and News Media Concerns
The shift towards AI chatbots delivering news has raised concerns among media organisations. The New York Times and other outlets have sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. Earlier in October, News Corp, publisher of the Wall Street Journal and New York Post, filed a lawsuit against another AI search engine called Perplexity.
OpenAI's new search engine was developed with assistance from news partners like The Associated Press and News Corp. It will feature links to sources such as news articles and blog posts. However, it's unclear if these links will directly correspond to the original sources of the information provided by the chatbot.
Google's AI Search Challenges
Google's AI-driven search updates followed a year of testing with a limited user group. Despite improvements, issues persist with inaccuracies known as hallucinations. These errors highlight the risks associated with relying on AI chatbots for information retrieval.
The introduction of OpenAI's search engine marks a significant development in the AI landscape. As it expands its user base, the impact on internet traffic patterns remains to be seen. The collaboration with established news organisations suggests an effort to ensure credible information sources are utilised.
This new venture by OpenAI could reshape how users interact with search engines and access information online. As AI technology continues to evolve, its influence on traditional media and information dissemination is likely to grow.
