Ohio Doctor Sherri Tenpenny Regains License After COVID-19 Vaccine Controversy
An Ohio-based osteopathic doctor, Sherri Tenpenny, who gained widespread attention for her controversial claims regarding COVID-19 vaccines, has had her medical license reinstated. The Ohio State Medical Board made this decision after Tenpenny agreed to a settlement that included a USD 3,000 fine and a commitment to cooperate with ongoing investigations. This development follows her license suspension in August 2023 due to her initial refusal to engage with the board's investigative processes.

Dr. Tenpenny has been a licensed medical practitioner in Ohio since 1984 but came under national scrutiny in 2021. Her contentious statements were made during a testimony before a state legislative panel discussing a proposal to prohibit vaccine mandates and mask requirements. Tenpenny asserted that COVID-19 vaccines could induce magnetism in recipients, allow them to "interface" with cellular towers, and disrupt women's menstrual cycles. These claims led to approximately 350 complaints being filed against her, prompting the medical board to initiate an investigation into her conduct.
The investigation sought Tenpenny's cooperation through meetings, written responses, and compliance with a subpoena for deposition, which she declined. Describing the investigation as an "illegal fishing expedition," her attorney communicated her refusal to participate. This stance resulted in the suspension of her medical license on procedural grounds for failing to cooperate with the board's investigation.
Last month, the Ohio State Medical Board voted 7-2 in favor of reinstating Tenpenny's medical license. The board's decision was predicated on her fulfillment of the conditions laid out for reinstatement, including the payment of the fine and her agreement to cooperate with investigators moving forward. Following the board's decision, Tenpenny took to the X social platform to announce her license reinstatement. In her post, she expressed gratitude for the support and prayers she received during what she described as "challenging times."
This case has highlighted the complexities surrounding medical professionalism and freedom of speech within the healthcare sector. It also underscores the regulatory mechanisms in place to address complaints against medical practitioners and ensure compliance with investigatory processes.
