Greensboro Police Officer Fatally Shot While Responding to Armed Incident at Supermarket
A police officer in North Carolina was fatally shot while responding to a report of an armed individual inside a supermarket. Authorities confirmed that a suspect was later apprehended. Officer Michael Horan, from the Greensboro Police Department, was shot at a Food Lion store in Greensboro. The incident occurred before midday, and the police announced his death during an afternoon press conference.

Ramona Miller, who was shopping with her granddaughter, recounted the event to WGHP-TV. "We were on our way out and I was purchasing a lottery ticket and I was just sitting there and heard a pop-pop and then pop-pop-pop. I think I heard five shots," Miller said. "At first I didn’t know it was a shooting ... but an employee yelled out shooting! shooting!" She and her granddaughter left the store as police arrived.
Investigation Underway
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated by authorities. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is expected to continue looking into the case. As of Monday afternoon, no additional details about the shooting were released by officials.
Officer Horan joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and became a sworn officer in early 2018. Assistant Police Chief Milford J. Harris praised Horan's service, stating, "He was an excellent officer. He had an outstanding reputation inside the department and in the community." Horan served in the department's patrol bureau.
Community Response
Governor Roy Cooper has been closely monitoring the situation. On X, he mentioned that his office had deployed a "significant" number of state law enforcement officers to assist with the emergency response in Greensboro. A large police presence was observed outside the grocery store following the incident.
The Food Lion store will remain closed while investigations continue, according to a company spokesperson. The company plans to support its affected employees and is cooperating fully with local authorities.
Calls for Action
Democratic state Sen. Michael Garrett, representing part of Guilford County where Greensboro is located, emphasized the need for improved safety measures for law enforcement officers. "During what should be a time of joy and celebration, another brave officer has been shot in the line of duty. Another family's holiday season forever changed," Garrett stated on Facebook.
This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about officer safety and calls for legislative action to enhance resources for law enforcement personnel across North Carolina.
