North Korean Troops Near Ukraine Border Prepare for Imminent Combat Engagement, US Officials Report
Approximately 8,000 North Korean soldiers are currently stationed in Russia near the Ukrainian border, preparing to assist Russian forces against Ukraine, according to the Biden administration. This marks a significant increase from previous reports, where only a few troops were mentioned as moving towards the border in the Kursk region. The US estimates around 10,000 North Korean troops are in Russia, while Seoul and its allies believe the number has risen to 11,000, and Ukraine estimates up to 12,000.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that these troops have not yet engaged in combat but are expected to do so soon. He noted that Russia has been training North Korean soldiers in artillery, drones, and basic infantry operations, indicating their intended use in frontline operations. This development has raised global concerns about the potential expansion of the war and the military aid Russia might provide North Korea in return.
North Korea's Military Involvement
The deployment of North Korean troops has become a focal point during meetings between US and South Korean leaders in Washington. South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul condemned the deployment and called for an immediate withdrawal of the troops. He expressed concern that North Korea's actions threaten both Europe and the Korean Peninsula, prompting Seoul to consider necessary measures.
On Thursday, North Korea test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time in nearly a year. This move suggests advancements in its capability to launch long-range nuclear attacks on the US mainland. Some experts speculate that Russia may have provided technological assistance for this launch.
International Reactions
The US, South Korea, and Japan issued a joint statement condemning North Korea's missile launch as a "flagrant violation" of UN Security Council resolutions. They criticized the growing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, particularly concerning troop deployment. The statement urged North Korea to cease its provocative actions threatening peace on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
During a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday, US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood highlighted the presence of North Korean troops near Ukraine. He questioned Russia's denial of DPRK troops being in Russia. The Russian representative did not respond, and the session was adjourned.
Concerns Over Military Technology Exchange
There are concerns about what military technologies North Korea might receive from Russia in exchange for deploying troops. This situation raises questions about whether other nations might send their forces to join the conflict. Additionally, Austin noted that North Korean troops are wearing Russian uniforms and using Russian equipment as they advance toward Ukraine.
North Korea has also supplied munitions to Russia. Earlier this month, the White House released images purportedly showing North Korea shipping 1,000 containers of military equipment to Russia by rail. This development is seen as a dangerous and destabilizing move by Austin.
The situation continues to evolve as international leaders monitor these developments closely. The presence of North Korean troops near Ukraine adds complexity to an already tense geopolitical landscape. The potential implications for regional stability remain a significant concern for global powers involved.
