Nobel Prize Winner Peter Higgs, Who Introduced The God Particle Theory, Dies At 94

Nobel Prize winner, British physicist Peter Higgs, who discovered the "god particle", is no more. He died at the age of 94 "peacefully at home following a short illness," said the University of Edinburgh. Higgs brought the existence of a new particle, the Higgs boson, to light in 1964, which was confirmed 50 years later at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) by the Large Hadron Collider.

At this time of grief, Peter Higgs' family has requested the media and his followers to respect their privacy, Edinburgh University added.

Higgs' theory was based on the subatomic particles building blocks of matter and its mass. His physics theory explained the Standard Model and how this world was constructed.

Edinburgh University termed Peter Higgs' 1964 research as a groundbreaking demonstration of how "elemental particles achieved mass through the existence of a new sub-atomic particle″ which became popular as the Higgs boson.

Reacting to the saddening news of Peter Higgs, Edinburgh University Vice Chancellor, Peter Mathieson said, "Peter Higgs was a remarkable individual -- a truly gifted scientist whose vision and imagination have enriched our knowledge of the world that surrounds us."

Peter Higgs' research and visionary work motivated thousands of scientists, and students of physics, and his legacy will continue to inspire coming generations, Vice Chancellor added.
