Nobel Economics Prize 2024: Acemoglu, Johnson Ad Robinson Honored For Institutional Insights
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the winners of the 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, honoring Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson. This prestigious award recognizes their groundbreaking research on the formation of institutions and their impact on economic prosperity.

The trio's work has significantly advanced the understanding of how institutions-such as governments, legal systems, and economic frameworks-are established and how they function to shape economic outcomes. Their research underscores the critical role that inclusive and effective institutions play in fostering prosperity, while also examining how extractive institutions can hinder development.
The Nobel Committee stated that the work of the three laureates highlights the critical role of societal institutions in a nation's prosperity.
"Societies lacking a robust rule of law and those with institutions that exploit their citizens fail to foster growth or positive change. The research conducted by the laureates sheds light on the reasons behind this phenomenon," the committee added.
The esteemed award, officially known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, is the last prize to be awarded this year, with a value of 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1.1 million).
