Putin Addresses Uncertain Timeline for Ukraine War and Endorses Modi's BRICS Perspective

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged the challenges in predicting an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, he expressed confidence that Russia would emerge victorious. He appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concern over the situation. Putin also endorsed Modi's description of BRICS as a non-western rather than anti-western group.

Putin on Ukraine War and Modis BRICS Views

During a meeting with senior editors from BRICS nations, Putin highlighted the expansion of BRICS from its original five members to include five additional countries. He emphasised that BRICS should not be perceived as a bloc-style organisation. Modi is expected to attend the upcoming summit in Kazan on October 22-23.

BRICS Expansion and Economic Influence

The BRICS grouping now includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. It represents 24% of global GDP and 41% of the world's population. Putin stated that BRICS was never intended to oppose anyone and that its doors remain open to new members. He believes non-member countries will also benefit economically as the group develops.

Putin accused the US and NATO of provoking Russia into war, asserting that NATO is effectively waging war against Russia. He claimed that NATO professionals are responsible for precision weapon systems used by Ukraine. "We will have the upper hand. We'll win. We'll prevail," he declared through an interpreter.

India's Role in Peace Negotiations

When asked about India's potential role in mediating peace between Russia and Ukraine, Putin referred to Modi's concern as a "friend." He expressed gratitude for India's stance on seeking a peaceful resolution. Modi had previously communicated his support for an early resolution to the conflict during a phone call with Putin on August 27.

Putin mentioned that Russia is in contact with India, China, and Brazil regarding resolving the Ukraine conflict. He criticised Ukraine for withdrawing from previous peace efforts while expressing his willingness to negotiate peace.

BRICS Summit and Cultural Exchange

At the upcoming BRICS summit, Putin plans to discuss boosting Indian cinema in Russia when he meets Modi. He noted the popularity of Indian films in Russia and expressed optimism about promoting them further. Additionally, he mentioned India's pharmaceutical and automotive industries, hinting at potential collaborations.

Addressing other issues, Putin accused the US of hindering China's development and dragging NATO into Asia. He criticised US actions as provocative and aimed at creating tension by involving allies like Australia.

Concerns Over Global Tensions

Putin voiced concerns about escalating tensions in Gaza and mentioned inviting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to BRICS events. On economic matters, he indicated that BRICS is cautiously progressing towards a common currency but did not provide specific details.

The Russian leader reiterated that BRICS is not against any nation but seeks to foster economic cooperation among its members. As discussions continue at the summit, it remains crucial for member countries to navigate geopolitical challenges while strengthening economic ties.
