Putin Addresses Ukraine War Timeline and Commends Modi's BRICS Perspective Ahead of Summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged the challenges in determining a timeline for ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, he expressed confidence that Russia would ultimately succeed. He also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concern about the situation. Putin emphasised that Russia is grateful for Modi's support for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

During an interaction with senior editors from BRICS nations at his residence near Moscow, Putin highlighted Modi's description of BRICS as a non-western rather than anti-western group. He agreed with this perspective and clarified that BRICS should not be viewed as a bloc-style organisation. The group, which initially had five members, has now expanded to include five more countries.
BRICS Expansion and Economic Impact
The BRICS grouping now includes Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates. It represents 24% of global GDP and 41% of the world's population. Putin stated that BRICS is open to new members and that even non-member countries could benefit economically from its development.
Putin also addressed questions about the possibility of a common currency within BRICS. He mentioned that progress on this front is slow and cautious. The Russian leader noted that what sets BRICS apart is its non-confrontational stance towards other global powers.
India's Role and Cultural Exchange
Putin expressed interest in discussing ways to boost Indian films in Russia during his upcoming meeting with Modi. He acknowledged the popularity of Indian movies in Russia and mentioned India's pharmaceutical and automotive industries. He suggested finding common ground to promote Indian films in the Russian market.
When asked about India's potential role in mediating peace between Russia and Ukraine, Putin referred to Modi as a "friend" and appreciated his concern for resolving the conflict peacefully. Modi had previously expressed support for an early resolution after discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Geopolitical Tensions and NATO
Putin criticised the US and NATO for their roles in escalating tensions with Russia, claiming they pushed Russia into war. He accused NATO of conducting operations against Russia using professional military systems. Despite this, he asserted that Russia's military remains highly effective and technologically advanced.
The Russian leader expressed willingness to negotiate peace but accused Ukraine of withdrawing from previous efforts. He stated that NATO would eventually tire of its involvement in the conflict, reiterating his belief that Russia would prevail.
US-China Relations and Global Dynamics
Putin accused the US of attempting to hinder China's development, likening it to trying to stop the sun from rising. He criticised US actions in various regions, suggesting they provoke tensions by involving NATO allies like Australia in Asia.
He also commented on the situation in Gaza, expressing concern over escalating tensions there. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been invited to participate in BRICS events, indicating a broader engagement with global issues beyond economic matters.
The upcoming BRICS Summit will see Modi visiting Kazan on October 22-23. This meeting will provide an opportunity for further discussions on these topics among member nations.
