Putin Addresses Uncertain Timeline for Ukraine War and Endorses Modi's Views on BRICS Grouping

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently acknowledged the challenges in predicting an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. He expressed confidence in Russia's eventual victory and appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's concern over the situation. Putin also praised Modi's description of BRICS as a non-western rather than anti-western group, ahead of the upcoming 16th BRICS Summit.

Putin on Ukraine War Timeline and BRICS

During a meeting with senior editors from BRICS nations at his residence near Moscow, Putin mentioned potential discussions with Modi about promoting Indian films in Russia. He referred to Modi as a "friend" and expressed gratitude for India's interest in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Modi had previously advocated for a peaceful resolution during conversations with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

BRICS Expansion and Economic Influence

BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has expanded to welcome Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE. The group represents 24% of global GDP and 41% of the world's population. Putin emphasized that BRICS is not designed to oppose any nation but aims to serve as an economic counterbalance to Western influence.

Putin stated that BRICS remains open to new members and that even non-member countries could benefit economically from its growth. He highlighted that BRICS was never intended to be against anyone, echoing Modi's sentiment that it is a non-western entity.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict and NATO Involvement

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in February 2022. Putin accused the US and NATO of provoking Russia into war, asserting that NATO professionals are involved in Ukraine's military operations. He claimed that NATO would eventually tire of the conflict while praising the Russian army's combat effectiveness.

"We will have the upper hand. We'll win. We'll prevail," Putin stated through an interpreter during the media interaction. He expressed willingness to negotiate peace but accused Ukraine of withdrawing from previous efforts.

Global Tensions and Economic Cooperation

Putin criticized the US for attempting to hinder China's development, likening it to stopping the sun from rising. He accused the US of inciting tensions globally by involving NATO in Asia and rallying allies like Australia for additional pressure points.

On economic matters, Putin addressed questions about a common BRICS currency, noting progress is slow and cautious. He also mentioned India's pharmaceutical and automotive industries, indicating potential collaboration if there is mutual interest.

Putin expressed concern over escalating tensions in Gaza and noted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been invited to BRICS events. As the summit approaches, these discussions highlight BRICS' role in global economic dynamics and geopolitical issues.
