Tragic Collision Between Plane and Helicopter in Washington DC Leaves No Survivors

A tragic aviation accident occurred when a commercial American Eagle plane collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport. The crash, which happened over the Potomac River, resulted in both aircraft plunging into the icy waters. "Both aircraft crashed instantly and were immediately submerged into the icy waters of the Potomac. A real tragedy. The massive search and rescue mission was under way throughout the night, leveraging every asset at our disposal… The work has now shifted to a recovery mission. Sadly, there are no survivors," US President Donald Trump told reporters at a White House news conference.

Plane and Helicopter Collision in Washington DC

The collision took place just before 9 pm on Wednesday. The American Airlines regional jet was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, while the Black Hawk helicopter had three military personnel on board. The plane was arriving from Wichita, Kansas, and was on its final approach to the airport in Washington, DC.

Rescue Efforts and International Impact

Washington DC Fire Chief John Donnelly reported that rescue teams have so far recovered 27 bodies from the plane and one from the helicopter. President Trump mentioned that among those on board were nationals from other countries, including Russia. "We have a Russia contingent, some very talented people, unfortunately, were on that plane, very, very, very sorry about that," he said.

The US is coordinating with Russia to return the bodies of their citizens to their families. Trump added that there were individuals from other countries as well and that announcements would be made soon after contacting those nations.

Investigation and Speculations

The cause of the crash remains unknown, though President Trump expressed strong opinions regarding potential factors. He criticised previous administrations for not prioritising talent in the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). "I changed the Obama standards from very mediocre at best to extraordinary, you remember that," he stated.

Trump suggested an elevation issue might have contributed to the crash. He questioned why both aircraft were at the same altitude and noted that visually someone should have noticed and adjusted the helicopter's path. "There’s never going to be a tragedy if you’re at a different elevation," he remarked.

Political Criticism

President Trump also blamed policy changes made by the Biden administration for lowering standards in air traffic control. He claimed his administration prioritised safety over politics, unlike his successors. "I put safety first, Obama, Biden and the Democrats put policy first," he asserted.

The president expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life and emphasised unity in grief. "We are one family and today we are all heartbroken we’re all searching for answers," he said.

This tragic event has left many questions unanswered as investigations continue into what led to this devastating collision over Washington's skies.
