No Deal in Islamabad: JD Vance Confirms Collapse of US-Iran Truce Talks

After a marathon 15-hour meeting, talks between Washington and Tehran have stalled, and the US delegation is heading back after failing to reach a ceasefire agreement with Iran, leaving efforts to secure a lasting deal over the Middle East war unresolved.

The delegation, led by US Vice President JD Vance, decided to return after 21 hours of negotiations in Islamabad. Officials from the United States and Iran could not settle key points required to turn the fragile pause in fighting into a more durable arrangement.

The negotiations followed a Middle East war that continued for nearly 40 days before both sides accepted a temporary two-week ceasefire. Islamabad in Pakistan hosted the indirect discussions, which aimed to shift the short truce into a structured and longer-term peace framework acceptable to both capitals.

United States and Iran talks hit roadblock over Strait of Hormuz issues

According to officials, the process broke down over several unresolved matters, including disagreements around reopening the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway has been central to concerns over regional trade and energy flows, and it emerged as one of the most sensitive points during the exchanges between Washington and Tehran.

JD Vance explained that the United States had presented detailed conditions during the Islamabad round. "We've made very clear what our red lines are, what things we're willing to accommodate them on, and what things we're not willing to accommodate them on, and we've made that as clear as we possibly could, and may have chosen not to accept our terms," Vance told reporters while describing the talks.

With no agreement reached by 12 April 2026, the temporary ceasefire remains the only formal pause in the conflict. Both governments now return to their capitals without a follow-up plan announced, and the future of any extended settlement over the Middle East war is still uncertain.
