Nine Workers Injured in Critical Explosion at Matla Power Station in South Africa
An explosion at Matla Power Station, owned by Eskom, injured nine workers, with one in critical condition. The incident occurred due to a high-pressure steam pipe rupture above the Unit 6 transformer. This led to a loud noise and power loss in the area. Dust and power loss delayed a full assessment until Friday morning.

Technical teams are currently evaluating the damage and determining the necessary repairs. Eskom has stated there is no evidence of sabotage. The Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, along with Eskom's Executive Committee and Board members, visited the site to support the leadership team and employees.
Impact on Load Shedding Suspension
Eskom Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo, assured that this incident would not affect the suspension of load shedding. Load shedding had caused widespread blackouts across South Africa until it was suspended over six months ago. Matla Power Station is crucial in Eskom's Generation Recovery Plan.
Despite the challenges, Matla Power Station has shown significant improvements. Over the past 18 months, employees have achieved an Energy Availability Factor (EAF) of 67.12 per cent. This performance has helped Eskom manage system shocks better, although generation capacity remains tight.
Details of Injuries
The steam leak from the damaged pipe resulted in burn injuries for nine employees. One worker is critically injured, while two others are semi-critical but stable. Six employees sustained less severe injuries; two have already been discharged from the hospital. Eight other team members were unharmed and sent home.
Dr Ramokgopa visited the injured employees later in the day to offer support. The visit aimed to provide reassurance and assistance to those affected by the incident. The focus remains on ensuring safety and restoring operations at Matla Power Station.
Eskom continues to prioritise Matla as one of six key power stations in its recovery efforts. The company's goal is to end load shedding by improving generation performance across its coal-fired fleet. Weekly progress is being made despite ongoing challenges.
The situation at Matla Power Station highlights the importance of maintaining infrastructure and ensuring employee safety. Eskom's commitment to addressing these issues is crucial for South Africa's energy stability.
