Indian National Nikhil Gupta Extradited To US From Czech Republic For Murder Plot Against Sikh Separatist

Gupta is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, awaiting his trial.

Indian national Nikhil Gupta, 52, has been extradited from the Czech Republic to the United States, facing allegations of involvement in a murder-for-hire plot targeting Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

Gupta's arrest last year came at the behest of the US government, and he is now expected to make a court appearance in New York.

This development was first reported by The Washington Post, highlighting the international legal collaboration between the Czech Republic and the United States.

Gupta is currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Brooklyn, awaiting his trial. According to reports, he was transported to New York over the weekend, with federal prosecutors preparing to present their case against him.

Allegations suggest Gupta paid a hitman $15,000 as part of a plan to assassinate Pannun, with claims of an unnamed Indian government official's involvement in the plot.

The extradition occurs amidst diplomatic engagements, notably ahead of US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's visit to New Delhi for the annual ICET dialogue. The issue of Gupta's extradition and the allegations against him are expected to be topics of discussion between Sullivan and his Indian counterpart, Ajit Doval.

India has officially denied any involvement in the case and has launched its own investigation into the matter.

Defending Gupta, his attorney Rohini Musa has contested the charges, arguing there is insufficient evidence linking Gupta to the alleged assassination plot.

Musa's statements, as reported by The Washington Post, criticize both the legal advice Gupta received in the Czech Republic and the diplomatic tensions between India and the United States over this case. Musa contends that her client is being unjustly prosecuted, caught in a crossfire of international relations.

This case underscores the complexities of international law enforcement cooperation and diplomatic relations, especially involving allegations of such a serious nature. As Gupta faces these charges in a US court, the unfolding legal proceedings will likely attract significant attention from both legal experts and international observers.
