Deadly Cookie: New York Womans Tragic End After Mislabeled Treat
A New York City womans life was tragically cut short after she unknowingly consumed a mislabeled cookie containing peanuts, leading to a product recall by Stew Leonards grocery stores in Connecticut.
A tragic incident occurred in the United States, resulting in the unfortunate death of a New York City woman. The cause of her demise was attributed to the consumption of a mislabeled cookie containing peanuts, which were not listed as an ingredient on the packaging.

Recall of Mislabeled Cookies
In response to this incident, Stew Leonards, a grocery store chain in Connecticut, announced a recall of their Vanilla Florentine Cookies sold in Danbury and Newington stores between November 6 and December 31. This recall was conducted in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure consumer safety.
Product Details and Distribution
Approximately 500 packages of the holiday cookies were sold during the specified period. The cookies were produced by Cookies United, a Long Island-based wholesaler, and carried the Stew Leonards brand name.
Identification of the Victim
The victim of this unfortunate incident was identified as Órla Baxendale, a talented dancer who moved to New York City to pursue her passion for dance. Sadly, she passed away on January 11 after suffering anaphylactic shock due to a severe allergic reaction to the peanuts in the cookie.
Supplier's Negligence
According to Stew Leonard Jr., the president and CEO of Stew Leonards, the supplier, Cookies United, made an unauthorized change in the recipe by replacing soy nuts with peanuts without informing the retailer's chief safety officer. This oversight resulted in the mislabeling of the cookies, leading to the tragic consequences.
Response from Cookies United
In response to the allegations, Cookies United stated that they had notified Stew Leonards in July about the inclusion of peanuts in the product and that all products shipped to the retailer were appropriately labeled. However, they asserted that the incorrect label was created by Stew Leonards.
The mislabeling of food products can have severe consequences, especially for individuals with severe allergies. This incident highlights the importance of accurate labeling and communication between suppliers and retailers to ensure consumer safety. The relevant authorities are investigating the matter to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
