Man Gets 25 Years for Killing Woman in Driveway
Kevin Monahan, 66, was sentenced to more than 25 years to life in prison for fatally shooting Kaylin Gillis, 20, after her SUV mistakenly entered his driveway in Hebron, New York.
In a tragic incident that occurred in Fort Edward, upstate New York, a man named Kevin Monahan was sentenced to more than 25 years to life in prison for fatally shooting a 20-year-old woman, Kaylin Gillis. The incident took place last April when Gillis and her friends mistakenly drove into Monahan's long, winding driveway while searching for a party at another person's house in the town of Hebron.

Judge Emphasizes the Importance of Accountability
Judge Adam Michelini, who presided over the case, stressed the significance of holding individuals accountable for their actions and preventing future harm. He stated, "I think it's important that people know that it is not OK to shoot people and kill them who drive down your driveway." The judge further emphasized the need for Monahan to remain behind bars to protect society from potential future harm.
Emotional Impact on Victim's Family and Friends
During the sentencing hearing, Gillis' father, boyfriend, and best friend expressed their anguish and the profound impact of her loss on their lives. Kaylin's boyfriend, Blake Walsh, addressed Monahan directly, expressing his inability to forgive him for his actions. Alexandra Whiting, a passenger in the car, shared her struggles with the loss of her best friend and the deep-rooted fear and hatred she now feels in everyday situations.
Maximum Sentence Imposed
Considering the gravity of the crime and the lack of remorse shown by Monahan, Judge Michelini handed down the maximum sentence. In addition to the 25 years to life for second-degree murder, Monahan received a consecutive sentence of one-and-a-third to four years for tampering with physical evidence. A sentence for reckless endangerment will be served concurrently.
Defense Attorney's Response
Despite the overwhelming evidence against Monahan, his defense attorneys indicated that they would appeal the verdict. They had sought leniency during the sentencing hearing, but the judge deemed the maximum sentence appropriate given the circumstances of the case.
National Attention on the Case
Gillis' death garnered significant attention beyond upstate New York, occurring shortly after another tragic incident in Kansas City. In that case, a 16-year-old Black boy named Ralph Yarl was wounded by an 84-year-old white man after mistakenly going to the wrong door while trying to pick up his younger brother.
Details of the Incident
On the night of Gillis' death, the group of friends realized their mistake and were turning around when Monahan fired a second shot, striking Gillis in the neck as she sat in the front passenger seat of the SUV driven by her boyfriend. Monahan maintained that the fatal shot was an accident and that the shotgun was defective. He also claimed that he believed his house was under siege by intruders and intended to fire a warning shot to scare them away.
Jury's Verdict and Monahan's Reaction
After deliberating for less than two hours, the jury returned guilty verdicts against Monahan for murder, reckless endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence. Despite the opportunity to speak, Monahan declined, and he was subsequently led away to applause and a shout of "coward" from the gallery.
The tragic incident that led to the death of Kaylin Gillis has left an indelible mark on her family, friends, and the community. The sentencing of Kevin Monahan to 25 years to life in prison serves as a reminder of the consequences of irrational and violent actions. It underscores the importance of accountability and the need to prioritize public safety and prevent future tragedies.
