New York Man Kills Four Family Members Over Home Sale Dispute

A New York man, Joseph DeLucia, Jr., fatally shot four family members before committing suicide. The incident occurred on Sunday in Syosset, Long Island, just days after his mother's funeral. DeLucia, 59, had lived in his late mother's home all his life and was distressed about being forced to move out.

Family Tragedy Over Home Sale

Family Gathering Turns Tragic

The family had gathered at the house to discuss its sale. Instead of a discussion, DeLucia fired 12 rounds from a shotgun, killing his three siblings and a niece. Nassau County Police Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick confirmed the victims were Joanne Kearns, 69; Frank DeLucia, 64; Tina Hammond, 64; and Victoria Hammond, 30.

After the shooting, DeLucia went outside and shouted about his actions before turning the gun on himself. Fitzpatrick mentioned that surviving family members had assured DeLucia he would be provided for and not cut out of the will but needed to move out.

Community Concerns and Mental Health

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder revealed that there were community concerns about DeLucia's mental state after his mother's death. Ryder stated that using "red flag" laws could have prevented him from obtaining a firearm if authorities had been aware of his mental health issues.

"These are things that are disturbing to us as law enforcement that we open so many avenues to ask us for help," Ryder said. "We are asking our communities to not sit back. Be our eyes, be our ears and let us know what is happening."

Previous Interactions with Law Enforcement

Fitzpatrick noted that police had only been called to the residence once in recent years for a wellness check. There were no signs at that time indicating DeLucia was a danger. His only arrest was for driving under the influence in 1983.

DeLucia worked as a local auto mechanic and was known to hoard tools and car repair items in the house. Fitzpatrick added that while it’s uncertain if the incident could have been prevented, there might have been a chance.

The family had gathered ahead of a meeting with a local real estate agent when the tragic event unfolded. This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and mental health awareness in preventing such tragedies.

The police are still investigating reports of DeLucia's past mental health issues to understand better what led to this devastating event.
