New York City Police Investigate Homicide of Woman Found on Fire in Subway Car

Authorities in New York City are searching for a suspect linked to the tragic death of a woman on a subway train. The incident occurred early Sunday morning when the woman, who was asleep on a stationary train, was set on fire. Police reported that an unidentified man approached her, ignited the fire, and then exited the subway car around 7:30 a.m.

Police Investigate Subway Car Homicide

Officers patrolling the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station detected smoke and noticed unusual activity on the platform. They discovered the woman engulfed in flames in the middle of the train. Detective Austin Glickman stated that emergency services pronounced her dead after extinguishing the fire. No arrests have been made yet.

Investigation and Public Appeal

The police are treating this case as a homicide and have requested public assistance. They are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest. The suspect is described as a male aged between 25 and 30 years, last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a dark knit hat with a red band, and brown boots.

The subway car was at the end of its route when the incident happened. Typically, doors remain open for cleaning or during service breaks. This tragic event marked the second fatality on New York's subway system that Sunday.

Earlier Incident in Queens

Earlier that day, at 12:35 a.m., police responded to an assault at the 61st Street-Woodside Station in Queens. They found two men injured: a 37-year-old with a stab wound to his torso and a 26-year-old with multiple slashes. The older man died at a nearby hospital, while the younger man remains stable. Investigations into this incident are ongoing.

In response to rising subway crimes, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has deployed National Guard members to assist police with random bag searches for weapons. Additional personnel have been sent to enhance security during the holiday season.

The city's efforts aim to ensure safety amid increasing concerns over subway violence. The community is urged to cooperate with authorities by providing any information that could help solve these cases.
