Third Temporary Channel Enhances Vessel Access to Baltimore Port

In a significant development for maritime operations, the Port of Baltimore has inaugurated a third temporary channel to facilitate the entry and departure of boats. This new passage, situated northeast of the damaged Francis Scott Key Bridge, is now accessible to "commercially essential vessels," as announced by port authorities late Friday. This initiative marks a crucial step in expanding shipping access while salvage operations continue on the collapsed sections of the bridge, aiming for its eventual reconstruction.

New Channel at Baltimore Port

The alternate route boasts a controlling depth of 20 feet (6.1 meters), a horizontal clearance of 300 feet (91.4 meters), and a vertical clearance of 135 feet (41.2 meters). According to Capt. David O'Connell of the Coast Guard and port, this enhanced access allows a broader range of vessels to utilize the port. The efforts are part of a broader strategy to restore the port's operational capacity, with the new channel enabling approximately 15% of the commercial activity that was ongoing before the bridge's collapse to resume.

The necessity for these temporary channels arose following a tragic incident on March 26, when the cargo ship Dali collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, leading to its partial collapse. The first of these temporary passages was established on April 1, signaling the beginning of efforts to mitigate the impact on one of the East Coast's most vital maritime transit hubs.

Officials are optimistic about opening another channel by month's end, which would significantly increase maritime traffic flow into the port. Meanwhile, extensive salvage operations are underway to clear thousands of tons of debris from atop the Dali and surrounding areas. To date, workers have removed approximately 1,300 tons (1,179 metric tons) of steel from the site.

The collision not only disrupted maritime activities but also resulted in tragic loss of life, with six roadwork crew members on the bridge losing their lives in the incident. Efforts to locate two missing bodies continue as part of the ongoing recovery operations.

This series of measures underscores the commitment to restoring full functionality to the Port of Baltimore and ensuring the safety and efficiency of its operations. As work progresses on these fronts, the maritime community watches closely, hopeful for a swift return to normalcy in one of America's busiest ports.
