New Sri Lankan president to be sworn in today

Colombo, Jan 9: Maithripala Sirisena is set to be sworn in as the new president of Sri Lanka on Friday, leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe said.

Speaking to the media, former prime minister Wickremasinghe said he met outgoing President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday morning and the latter conceded defeat.

He also said that Rajapaksa spoke to his successor Sirisena, his former party colleague, and stressed a smooth transition of power.

Wickremasinghe urged all parties not to indulge in violence and said he had spoken to the police and requested them to take action against those who would break the law.
