New Mpox Variant Detected: THESE 7 Countries Confirm Cases

The new Mpox strain, Clade Ib, has caused global concern due to its rapid spread and the lack of information. Originating from DRC, it's now seen globally.

A new form of the virus, clade Ib, has sparked global concern due to its rapid spread and limited information available about it.

The World Organization declared mpox a public health emergency for the second time in two years after an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spread to neighbouring countries.

The Democratic Republic of Congo currently has two strains of mpox: the endemic clade I and the newly identified clade Ib, as reported by Reuters. The latter spreads more easily through close contact, including sexual transmission. Since January 2023, there have been 27,000 cases and over 1,100 deaths, primarily among children, as reported by Firstpost.

Countries Reporting Clade Ib Mpox Cases

  • Sweden confirmed its first case of the new mpox strain on August 15. Health officials stated that the infected individual had contracted the virus while in Africa. This marks the first instance of clade Ib spreading outside the African continent. The patient is currently receiving treatment.
  • In Thailand, a case involving a 66-year-old European man was reported on August 21 and confirmed as clade Ib on August 22. The man had arrived from an African country where the disease was prevalent.
  • Burundi's Ministry of Health confirmed 61 cases of clade Ib mpox across various districts as of August 9. According to WHO data, no deaths had been reported at that time.
  • Kenya reported its first-ever case of mpox on July 29, identifying it as clade Ib. As per WHO data up to August 8, no deaths have been associated with this case.
  • Rwanda has reported four confirmed cases of clade Ib mpox as of August 7. There have been no fatalities linked to these cases according to WHO data.
  • Uganda identified its first two cases of clade Ib mpox by August 2. Investigations revealed that these transmissions occurred outside Uganda, with no secondary transmission linked to these cases. No deaths were reported up to August 8.
  • This new strain's emergence highlights the need for increased vigilance and research to understand its transmission dynamics better and develop effective containment strategies.
