Court documents reveal that the suspect received a text message from the candidate's campaign on Friday, informing him of the upcoming breakfast event in Portsmouth. In response, the campaign staff received two disturbing text messages. One threatened to shoot the candidate in the head, while the other threatened to kill everyone present at the event and desecrate their bodies. The FBI traced the cellphone number used to send these messages to the suspect.
Search Warrant Executed
On Saturday, FBI agents executed a search warrant at the suspect's residence. The affidavit states that the threatening texts were discovered in a deleted folder on the suspect's phone.
Additional Threats Sent
During an interview with the FBI, the suspect admitted to sending similar threatening texts to "multiple other campaigns," according to the affidavit.
Potential Penalties
The charge against the suspect carries significant potential consequences. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000.
