The Netherlands and South Korea have forged a stronger partnership in the semiconductor sector, aiming to leverage their expertise and resources for mutual benefit.

Chip Champs: Netherlands, South Korea Join Forces in Semiconductor Race

The Netherlands and South Korea have taken a significant step forward in their strategic partnership by expanding cooperation in the semiconductor chip industry. This development was announced by caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte after a meeting with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol during the latter's two-day state visit to the Netherlands.

Semiconductor Collaboration

The two countries aim to enhance their collaboration in the semiconductor sector, recognizing its potential for mutual benefit. Prime Minister Rutte expressed optimism about this initiative, describing it as a promising endeavor that presents a win-win situation for both nations.

Nuclear Power Expansion

As part of the visit, South Korean nuclear power company KHNP signed a contract to conduct a feasibility study for the construction of two new nuclear power plants in the Dutch town of Borselle. This move aligns with the Netherlands' goal of transitioning to a carbon-free energy system. Dutch Climate and Energy Minister Rob Jetten emphasized the importance of nuclear energy in achieving this objective and highlighted the upcoming technical feasibility studies to be carried out by eligible parties.

Broadening Digital Cooperation

In addition to semiconductors and nuclear energy, the Netherlands and South Korea agreed to bolster cooperation in digital technologies. This includes areas such as artificial intelligence, mobile communications, and quantum research. Economic Affairs and Climate Minister Micky Adriaansens highlighted the significance of this collaboration in driving innovation and economic growth.

Strengthening International Ties

President Yoon's visit to the Netherlands comes shortly after he forged agreements with the United Kingdom to enhance trade and defense relations. These developments underscore South Korea's commitment to building stronger partnerships with key international players.
