Netanyahu Promises 'Total Victory' As Israel Marks 100 Days Of War
One hundred days of war have been marked by Israelis with a 100-minute pause in the working day and rallies to call for the return of hostages held in Gaza. However, little relief from the anxiety that has gripped the country since Hamas launched its attacks on October 7 has been experienced, reported The Guardian.
The incursion, in which 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed and 240 taken hostage, has left many Israelis deeply shaken. Normal life is returning to the streets of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and other cities, but many shops and restaurants are still closed, and hundreds of thousands of reservists have been mobilized.

In a televised address on Saturday, it was stated by the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that the war against Hamas would continue "until the end, until total victory." Arnon Bar-David, the leader of the Histadrut Confederation of Trade Unions, expressed in a mass meeting in Tel Aviv that Israel is "in the middle of a terrible dream, and I want to wake up from this terrible dream and create a new Israel." He added, "We will rebuild everything they have tried to destroy," Reported Sky News.
100 Days of War Marked by Anxiety and Strife
Israeli Resilience Amidst Delays: One hundred days of war have been marked by Israelis with a 100-minute pause in the working day and rallies to call for the return of hostages held in Gaza. Little relief from the anxiety that has gripped the country since Hamas launched its attacks on October 7 has been experienced, reported The Guardian.
Lingering Impact of Conflict: The incursion, which resulted in 1,200 people, mostly civilians, being killed and 240 taken hostage, has left many Israelis deeply shaken. Normal life is returning to the streets of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and other cities, but numerous shops and restaurants remain closed, and hundreds of thousands of reservists have been mobilized.
Netanyahu's Firm Resolve: In a televised address on Saturday, it was stated by the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, that the war against Hamas would continue "until the end, until total victory," according to the Times of Israel.
Ongoing Conflict Dynamics
Prolonged Conflict Predictions: Analysts and military officials in Israel have suggested that the conflict could endure for many months, potentially even a year. A continuing "existential fear" is described by many Israelis, heightened by the threat of a further war with Hezbollah along the country's disputed northern border.
Recent Hezbollah Attack: Two Israelis lost their lives when an anti-tank missile, possibly fired by Hezbollah, hit their home on Sunday, Reported Times Of Israel.
Gaza's Persistent Struggle: In Gaza, where Hamas has fiercely resisted Israel's air and ground campaign, the war continues unabated. The updated toll from the Palestinian health ministry in Ramallah indicates that Israel's offensive has killed at least 23,968 people, primarily women and children.
Civilian Casualty Debate: Israel attributes the high civilian casualties to Hamas, asserting that its fighters deliberately utilize civilian buildings and launch attacks from densely populated urban areas. Hamas-run medical authorities in Gaza reported on Saturday that 135 Palestinians had been killed in the previous 24 hours.
Devastating Airstrikes: After an Israeli airstrike before dawn on Saturday, footage showed rescue workers searching through the rubble of a building in Gaza City. The attack killed at least 20 people, including children. Another airstrike near the southern city of Rafah, packed with displaced families, killed at least 13 people, including two children.
Focus on Hostages and Future Actions
Hostage Situation: In Israel, much of the focus was on the hostages that Hamas and Palestine Islamic Jihad, a smaller Gaza faction, continue to hold. Thousands attended a 24-hour rally in Tel Aviv demanding the return of more than 130 hostages still held after a truce in November.
Pleas from Families: Family members of hostages spoke at the rally, sharing stories of the difficulties endured by those in captivity. Calls were made to the government to prioritize bringing the hostages back alive.
Challenges in Accomplishing Objectives: Israel has faced challenges in reconciling its declared war aims of crushing Hamas and freeing the hostages. Commentators and former military officials express scepticism about achieving these objectives.
Netanyahu's Determination: Prime Minister Netanyahu directly addressed these claims in his televised address, reiterating the possibility and necessity of achieving the declared objectives.
Potential Expansion of Campaign: Netanyahu also hinted at a potential expansion of Israel's campaign in Gaza, with a focus on cutting off smuggling tunnels under the Egypt-Gaza border.
Continuing Conflict in West Bank: There appears to be little chance of any change in policy in the occupied West Bank, where continual military raids on Palestinian towns and cities persist.
Toll on Lives: Since October 7, 333 Palestinians, including 84 children, have been killed across the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, according to the UN. Israeli security forces have killed 324 people, Israeli settlers eight, and one death is attributed to either Israeli forces or settlers. In the same period, five Israelis, including four members of the security forces, were killed in Palestinian attacks, reported the Guardian.
Political Challenges for Netanyahu: Prime Minister Netanyahu's political future hinges on convincing voters that he was not personally responsible for the failures preceding the attack by Hamas and that he has achieved his declared war aims. Tensions within Israel's ruling coalition reflect divisions among those prioritizing the return of hostages and those focusing on the effort to destroy Hamas.
Human Cost: More than 185 Israeli soldiers have now been killed in the offensive, underscoring the human cost of the prolonged conflict.
