Netanyahu Confirms Hamas Gaza Chief Mohammed Sinwar Killed In Israeli Airstrike

Mohammed Sinwar, the Gaza chief of Hamas and younger brother of the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on May 13. This has been declared by the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday. According to The Jerusalem Post, the statement, which came during Netanyahu's speech to the Knesset Plenum, was the Israeli government's first formal acknowledgement of Sinwar's passing.

The airstrike reportedly targeted a Hamas tunnel complex located beneath a hospital in Gaza, where Sinwar and his aides were believed to be hiding. According to Al-Hadath, a Saudi media outlet, Sinwar's body was recovered alongside the remains of at least ten aides, including Mohammad Shabana, the commander of the Rafah Brigade and considered one of Sinwar's potential successors.

Although Defense Minister Israel Katz hinted at Sinwar's death earlier in May, confirmation was delayed due to the uncertainty around identification. IDF sources, quoted by The Jerusalem Post, had initially expressed skepticism about foreign reports, but later acknowledged that Sinwar and Shabana were likely killed together.

At the time of his death, Mohammed Sinwar was reportedly in charge of 58 Israeli hostages, with approximately 21 believed to be still alive.

Who Was Muhammad Sinwar, 'The Shadow'?

Born in 1975 in Khan Younis, Gaza, Mohammed Sinwar joined Hamas in the late 1980s, following in the footsteps of his older brother Yahya Sinwar. While Yahya gained international notoriety as the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led massacre that triggered the war in Gaza, Mohammed operated largely behind the scenes and earned the nickname "The Shadow" for his low-profile but powerful role in the group's military command.

Following the elimination of Muhammad Deif, Hamas's longtime top military commander in July 2023, and later Yahya Sinwar in early 2024, Mohammed Sinwar took over Hamas's military wing. His tenure was marked by overseeing strategic operations and handling hostage negotiations, making him one of the most wanted individuals in Israel's ongoing campaign against Hamas.

His death is particularly significant given how quickly he rose to power after the decapitation of Hamas's top leadership over the past year.

Hamas' Gaza Chief Sinwar Killed: What It Means for Hamas

Mohammed Sinwar's elimination represents another major blow to Hamas's central command. According to The Jerusalem Post, this strike continues Israel's strategy of targeting the group's top echelon following the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh, Muhammad Deif, and Yahya Sinwar.

The loss of such key figures poses major challenges to Hamas's ability to coordinate its military operations and manage internal communications, particularly in relation to the ongoing hostage crisis. Without Sinwar's oversight, the command structure is expected to become fragmented, reducing operational efficiency and morale within the ranks.

Moreover, the precision of the Israeli strike-targeting a tunnel network beneath a hospital-signals an escalation in Israeli intelligence capabilities and operational reach, likely increasing the pressure on Hamas's remaining leadership both within Gaza and abroad.

If Mohammad Shabana, head of the Rafah Brigade, was also killed as reported by Al-Hadath, Hamas will face a leadership vacuum with no clear successor in place. This will likely weaken the group's military response in Rafah and further complicate its strategic positioning.

Overall, Sinwar's death sends a powerful message to Hamas and its regional allies, especially in Iran and Qatar, that Israel's campaign will relentlessly target its leadership infrastructure. While this may not immediately end the conflict, it significantly shifts the balance of power in Israel's favor and places Hamas in a critical phase of internal disarray.
