Nashville High School Shooting: Female Student Josselin Corea Escalante Fatally Shot by Classmate

A tragic shooting occurred at Antioch High School in Nashville, resulting in the death of a female student and injuries to another. The shooter, identified as 17-year-old Solomon Henderson, was also a student at the school. After the attack, he took his own life with a handgun, according to Metro Nashville Police spokesperson Don Aaron.

Police Chief John Drake reported that Henderson targeted 16-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante in the cafeteria, fatally shooting her. Authorities are investigating the motive and whether the victims were specifically targeted. A male student sustained a graze wound and was treated and released from the hospital.

School Safety Measures and Concerns

Adrienne Battle, superintendent of Nashville schools, highlighted existing safety measures like security cameras and school resource officers. Despite these efforts, she acknowledged they were insufficient to prevent this incident. Battle mentioned ongoing discussions about using metal detectors, though past research has shown mixed results.

During the shooting, two school resource officers were present in the building but not near the cafeteria. By the time they arrived at the scene, the gunman had already ended his life. The school, located in Antioch, houses approximately 2,000 students.

Community Response and Reactions

At a nearby family safety centre, officials assisted parents in reuniting with their children. Dajuan Bernard was among those waiting to see his son, a 10th grader who was held in the auditorium with other students. Bernard expressed concern over the increasing frequency of such incidents.

Fonda Abner, whose granddaughter attends Antioch High School, noted that the school lacks metal detectors. She recounted her granddaughter's attempts to contact her during the chaos but only heard background noise initially.

Gun Control Debate in Tennessee

This incident comes nearly two years after another shooting at a Nashville elementary school that claimed six lives. Despite calls for stricter gun control measures following that tragedy, Tennessee's Republican lawmakers have been reluctant to enact significant changes.

The state has instead focused on enhancing school security. Last year, legislation was passed allowing certain teachers and staff to carry concealed weapons on public school grounds without disclosing who is armed.

Previous Incidents in Antioch

Antioch has faced other violent events in recent years. In 2017, a shooting at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ resulted in one death and multiple injuries. The following year, four people were killed at a local Waffle House.
