NASA Night Map Puts Bihar Among World’s Brightest Regions, Internet Left Surprised

A recently released nighttime satellite map by NASA has caught widespread attention after Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh appeared among the brightest regions on Earth.

The visuals surprised many social media users, who did not expect the region to stand out so prominently.

What the NASA Study Shows

The map, released on April 16, highlights how artificial lighting across the world has changed between 2014 and 2022.

Scientists analysed nearly 1.6 million satellite images collected every night over nine years to create a detailed picture of global light patterns.

The research was led by Tian Li and Zhe Zhu from the University of Connecticut. They used advanced methods to study data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS).

Bihar and UP Shine Bright

According to the findings, northern India-especially the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar region-saw a sharp rise in artificial lighting during the study period.

Bihar, in particular, stood out as one of the brightest areas on the map, shown in golden shades that represent increased nighttime brightness.

The data also revealed that many regions in India, China, the Middle East, and Central America became brighter, while large parts of Europe showed a decline in lighting.

What the Colours Mean

In the map:

• Golden shades show areas where night-time lighting increased
• Purple shades indicate regions where lighting remained low or decreased

This colour contrast helped highlight regions experiencing rapid development or increased electricity use.

Miguel Roman, deputy director at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said such data is valuable for understanding energy use and planning.

He noted that satellite images of Earth at night can provide insights into development patterns and even national security concerns.

A Detailed Global Study

The study covered most populated areas of the world, from 60 degrees south to 70 degrees north latitude. The technology used is advanced enough to detect even small light sources, such as a toll booth on a highway.
