Narendra Modi unveils Gandhi statue, says non violence was an article of faith for Gandhi

Brisbane, Nov 16: Dressed in a white bandhgala, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here at Roma Street Parkland on Sunday to unveil the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking at the event, Modi said: "It is my good fortune that the first event as part of this is the unveiling of this statue." He said that he was grateful to Mayor of Brisbane for giving full cooperation and respecting feelings of Indian community.

Speaking about Mahatma Gandhi, Modi said: "On 2nd October an entire generation was born and not an individual. Gandhiji is still just as relevant to the world." We can fight terrorism, global warming with Gandhi's ideas, said Modi.

Modi further added that Gandhi was always against the exploitation of nature and he used it for inspiration. "Non violence was an article of faith for Mahatma Gandhi. He showed us the path of non-violence, he believed not only in our acts but also in our words we should be non-violent," Modi said.

Modi said that 'It is my good fortune that I could be here today.'

Modi was greeted by fans and supporters who chanted 'Modi, Modi,' on his arrival. Upon his arrival Narendra Modi greeted his supporters. Lord mayor of Brisbane and Governor of Queensland were also present at the event.

The unveiling of Mahatma Gandhi's statue ceremony was organised by Mahatma Gandhi memorial committee. It was also announced that a bridge in Brisbane will be named after Mahatma Gandhi.
