Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake: Death Toll Reaches 1,644 As Rescue Efforts Accelerate

Myanmar and Thailand have been rocked by a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake, leaving widespread destruction and a rising death toll. The quake struck Myanmar on Friday, triggering multiple aftershocks and sending tremors across neighboring countries, including China, Thailand, Vietnam, and parts of India. According to reports from the ruling junta, the death toll in Myanmar has surged to 1,644, while rescue teams work tirelessly to search for survivors and provide aid to those affected.

The earthquake originated near Mandalay, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometers. It struck at 12:50 pm local time (0620 GMT), as recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Shortly after the initial quake, a powerful aftershock measuring 6.4 magnitude followed, along with a series of additional tremors that further intensified the destruction.

The impact of the earthquake was also felt strongly in Thailand, where tremors caused buildings to sway, sending residents fleeing onto the streets. In Bangkok's Chatuchak market, a skyscraper collapsed, initially leading to a reported death toll of 10, which was later revised to six. Authorities in Thailand have been assessing the damage, with public transportation services temporarily halted in parts of the city due to safety concerns.

In Vietnam, seismic activity from the earthquake was reported in several areas. Meanwhile, China's Yunnan province, located in the country's southwest region, also experienced tremors. Beijing's earthquake agency classified the event as a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

While the earthquake was felt in parts of India, including Kolkata in West Bengal and Imphal in Manipur, there were no reports of significant damage or casualties in the country. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.

Myanmar has a history of powerful earthquakes, particularly along the Sagaing Fault, which runs through the country's central region. Between 1930 and 1956, the area experienced several major tremors, making it one of the most seismically active regions in Southeast Asia.

As search and rescue operations continue, authorities warn that the death toll in Myanmar and Thailand could rise further. Relief efforts are underway to assist those affected by the disaster, with emergency teams deployed to provide medical aid and shelter to displaced residents.
